For those in recovery, and their families, the idea of attending the Far Hills Race Meeting has likely never been a point of discussion. Variables and distractions abound for those battling addiction, with the very real possibility that attending could compromise the successes that they’ve worked so hard to achieve as they march forward on their journeys to sobriety. With no place to feel safe, or welcome, this population has sadly been marginalized and left on the periphery – an unfortunate circumstance as for over one hundred years, the Far Hills Race Meeting is where traditions are built, and unforgettable memories are made. Andi Williams, the executive director of Community in Crisis (CiC), is on a mission to change that.
Having spent years with her own family attending the Far Hills Race Meeting, race day holds a special place in Andi’s heart, as over the years she built lasting memories of her own on the property. It wasn’t until the generosity of the Far Hills Race Meeting touched CiC, naming the organization as one of its beneficiaries, that she had the inspiration to create “sober socialization” opportunities for those in recovery. The idea was simple – create a haven at Moorland Farm, where these individuals and their families could – with confidence and free of influence – attend the race and experience the joy and excitement that comes just once every year.
“We’re quite proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish here at The Hunt,” said Andi Williams, executive director of CiC. “Those in recovery are engaged in the fights of their lives and want nothing more than to feel included, and CIC having a presence at Moorland Farm is all about making that happen. We’re so grateful that the chairmen of the race share this vision and have graciously given us a special area alongside the back rail that will give our guests a literal front row seat to the action, on top of incredible food and mocktails. This is a dry and smoke-free space, an oasis of sorts for those in recovery. Our message is simple – ‘join us! This space is yours and we’re eager to give you an opportunity to make your own memories with your family and ours.”
While the Far Hills Race Meeting is renowned for its world class horse racing, at the end of the day it’s the charitable mission that deserves the recognition but is oftentimes overlooked. Over $20 million dollars has been donated to healthcare charities across New Jersey, something which simply could not be possible without the support of sponsors, partners and every ticket holder that walks on to Moorland Farm. That funding has been instrumental in advancing the work of organizations such as Community in Crisis. Combatting substance use disorders isn’t easy and the Far Hills Race Meeting is so proud to stand alongside their team to support those in recovery, and their families, as they continue to work towards their goals.
“When Andi first came to us with the idea of a dry tent and how she wanted to provide those in recovery with a way that they could safely enjoy a day at the races, it was something we immediately wanted to get behind,” said Far Hills Race Meeting Chairman, Guy Torsilieri. “It’s a simple accommodation that we know will have a lasting impact. We could not be prouder to have CiC as a beneficiary and are looking forward to continuing to support their efforts for the foreseeable future.”
Located in downtown Bernardsville, NJ, CiC is the Community Peer Recovery Center for Somerset County, and offers an array of resources from peer support, sober socialization, holistic natural recovery activities, workshops, and meetings. Over its decade long history, the organization has reached thousands of individuals, helping them become champions of their own sobriety and recovery.
